Water4Life

Water4Life is an initiative to help the local rural communities on an island in Indonesia. We eliminate the contamination of water and soil in a sustainable way. Currently, the more than 20,000 families living in the area do not have a stable water supply or water treatment system for their wastewater. This means that they lack clean drinking water, clean water to irritate their small-hold farm fields, and clean water for all sanitation and healthcare purposes. WNI-Austria aims to change this by helping the locals install the applicable water treatment and irrigation systems.

Since 2019, WNI-Austria has directly trained more than 100 local university students on how to create water treatment and irrigation systems that will lead to sustainable and profitable agricultural production.

Through our classes, the students have learned about the importance of having clean water for drinking, cooking, field irrigation, sanitation purposes, and healthcare needs. Indeed, water contamination in West Nias accounts for up to 75% of all diseases in the rural areas (BPS West Nias, 2019).

The water treatment systems we are currently helping the students install fundamentally changes the locals’ understanding of water treatment. After collecting the wastewater, the wastewater is not simply thrown into the normal septic tank or tossed into nature, but rather is treated to produce biogas for their homes. The byproduct of that process can be turned into organic fertilizer for their farms. The vast benefits that this system can bring to the area will motivate the farmers to build it on their farms to avoid contaminating their water.
